Sacred Spaces

Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral is designed in a cruciform, or cross, shape, following a traditional practice of associating the floorplan of church buildings with the Body of Christ on the Cross. In this light, the heart of Our Lord may be signified at the crossing, where His love is poured out for us on the altar of sacrifice. Christ then speaks to those gathered in the Assembly from the Cathedra, the chair of the Diocesan Bishop, from where He shepherds us along the ways of Life everlasting. The Body of Christ is then represented by the Assembly gathered in the nave and each transept, strengthened in the cross, as we sit within it and are formed by the mystery of its many graces.

Conformed to the cross of Christ, the Cathedral is also directed toward the east, in keeping with the ancient Christian tradition that churches face the new light of day, signifying the resurrection of Christ. When making or renewing baptismal promises, Christians in the early Church often first faced the west when renouncing Satan (and anything not of Christ) and then turned to face the east when professing the faith of Jesus, the Light of the world.

The Dome weighs 162 tons, and is topped with copper. The day the dome was secured atop the new cathedral, most of the workers called the task simply “the lift.” For itto work, many factors, such as wind speed, had to be optimal. They were, and on March 10,2016 an engineering feat was accomplished. In all, it took 31 minutes of active crane movement from initial lift to placement. In addition to employees from Clancy & Theys Construction Company, professionals from the Buckner Companies’ Heavy Cranes division, Baker Roofing and Steel Fab Steel Construction collaborated in the lift task.

Onlookers, many of whom clapped and watched with anticipation, lined Agnes Street to watch the historic event.
